A dusty rant

(Inspired by Walter De La Mare)

Slowly silently now the dust
walks the earth in a cloud of fust
This way and that way it peers and seeps
through window slits and keyhole peeps
One by one the sunbeams catch
the dust motes floating in that patch
Frightened of attack by a dust wall
with brooms of heather he sweeps the hall

Dust on the coat
dust on the wall
dust on the shoes
dust on the shawl
dust in the computer
dust in the carpet
dust in the cupboard
dust in the TV set

Dust motes dancing in the square
dust mites floating in the air
Dust, the last frontier
dust, swaggering buccaneer

I shall fight this scourge, this invasion
Till the day I finally fall
and turn into- what else? dust!

Some new year cheer - Contributions called for a new anthology

A new anthology of Spirited Poetry is being mooted by the employer of one Mr. Montague Egg ( he of Dorothy Sayers fame), merchandiser of fine wine and spirits.

Yours truly was entrusted with the arduous task of coming up with possible titles for the book. Here they are:
Spirited poems
In high spirits
White, red, and rosé
Rum ones
Vermouth verses
Driftwood and beach bums
The rising of the froth
Pink gins and blue frogs
Blotto boogies
Poetry and the art of primary fermentation (ref. winemaking)
Glug glug glug.. hic

Ta da! :D Wish you all a very happy new year and may the muse be kind.

Limericks

There was a pleasant old man of Fife
who ate papadums with a knife
Said he what is life
if not full of strife
Knifing papadums pleases the wife.
~~

A young monkey from Bihar
once walked into Tihar
He peeked into the cell
of a very powerful mell
Said he, this is heaven, not hell!

Thursday

The Decision

There it was. Sparkling, with a personality all its own. Brimming over with attitude.  One of his own. And yet. And yet, no one seemed to have even noticed it. There it lay. Ignored. Amongst so many others that were being cheered on.

He made his decision. It deserved better than this utter neglect. No more of this indifferent world. It was time to make a dignified exit. With a firm finger he clicked the mouse and deleted his wall post.

Monday

Spray, spray, thou garden hose

Spray, spray,
thou impish garden hose
and drench the windshield
of my new red Ferrari.

Thy foam doth cool
the heated engine
Thou art not such a wet rag
as man melancholy.

Thy power is not so keen
at will thou becometh unseen.
Speed is relative; steady state illusory.
So lets go,
let's roar to the uptown Mally
This life,
this life is one big superstore trolley.

(A take-off on 'Blow, blow thou winter wind' by Shakespeare)

A Magpie Tales prompt

Finish a conversation! Participate Now!

(A spoof on adverts)

Participate in our Conversation Contests and win big prizes!

We offer you a vast collection of juicy conversations that were abandoned at a critical juncture. Maybe because one of the participants really did not have time, could not think of a suitable rejoinder, or simply wished to escape an uncomfortable topic. In rare cases the participants were abruptly cut off (with a strong third-party grip around their throat) before they could finish explaining.

Now you have the power. To choose. And finish off these conversations- with a smart repartee, words of advice, farewell speech, or in your own unique style.

For practice we offer you a variety of surfaces against which your conversation will bounce off. Textured absorbent walls are usually preferred. You also have the option of glass surfaces where your speech will bounce back at you with realistic distortion.

We can find sparring partners for you if so required, in your own or any other language. For example you can converse in Jarawa dialect with someone who only understands renaissance Greek.

You also have the choice of exclusive practice space where you (and your partner if any) will be the only persons to hear what you say, or a common room with many practicing participants, where none including yourself can hear what you are saying.#

So what are you waiting for? Empower yourself now! Let the waves of a satisfactorily completed conversation flow over you! What's more, you might even win a prize!*

*conditions apply.
#facilities mentioned above come at a fee.

Saturday

Mating season

A shy young lass,
she always dreamt
of a tall, dark
and handsome prince.

And then one night
cupid struck his arrow.
In the moonlight
she saw a shadow
and heard a call
that thrilled the core
of her very being.
He, had arrived
to free her from
this gilded cage.
Hearing his whispered
sweet nothings,
she ignored
other warnings
and eloped
with her wild paramour.

Now the two
reside by a lake.
The big ears flap
and trunks entwine
to celebrate ardor
elephantine!

~~

The poem is inspired by a real life incident.
A circus elephant named ‘Savitri’, eloped with a wild tusker that came calling at Raniganj.
Her mahout is a puzzled man these days as she refuses to even recognize him.

Farex to Cellesse

A few terms you may need to know before reading the poem:
Farex - A well known brand of baby food in India (atleast it used to be at one time)
Cellesse - A flab reducing appliance of a consumer lifestyle co.

Farex to Cellesse

When you were born
the nurse held you
upside down, to the light
- and slapped you tight.

Your mom with horror beheld
a red & blue ape with shriveled
skin, a face twisted in anguish & pain
& decided to do something
about your weight gain.

The chubby little kiddo was
a delight to the eyes,
with a fondness for candy,
chocolates and liquorice.

The passing years
replaced puppy fat
with a well established derriere
making you a ‘pear’
among peers.

Fight that cellulite
that’s making you
fat and flabby.
From Farex to Cellesse
you’ve come a long way, baby!

Friday

about turn

I love you..

My fingers glide smoothly
across your lovely expanse

Unblemished,
a swathe alabaster
across which
cherished thoughts
run free
bathed in finest gel.

Hey, be careful
of that strong breeze.
oh, no! you can’t just sail away
with my treasure like that!

You insouciant bit of paper,
I hate you!
