Mating season

A shy young lass,
she always dreamt
of a tall, dark
and handsome prince.

And then one night
cupid struck his arrow.
In the moonlight
she saw a shadow
and heard a call
that thrilled the core
of her very being.
He, had arrived
to free her from
this gilded cage.
Hearing his whispered
sweet nothings,
she ignored
other warnings
and eloped
with her wild paramour.

Now the two
reside by a lake.
The big ears flap
and trunks entwine
to celebrate ardor
elephantine!

~~

The poem is inspired by a real life incident.
A circus elephant named ‘Savitri’, eloped with a wild tusker that came calling at Raniganj.
Her mahout is a puzzled man these days as she refuses to even recognize him.
